This summer, the students of Tyros embarked on an unforgettable journey into the world of performing arts at the Ala Centre for Culture and Alternative Education. Nestled in the heart of our community, Ala is more than just a theatre group; it’s a vibrant hub where artists from various disciplines converge to share, teach, and inspire.
Our morning began with an immersive exploration of music, sound, acting, performance, and dance. The students were introduced to the idea of art as a powerful medium of expression. They sang songs, danced with joy, and discovered how rhythm and movement can convey emotions beyond words.
A highlight of the day was a session with a skilled percussionist who demonstrated the transformative power of sound in storytelling. Through simple percussion patterns, he recreated the auditory illusion of a train approaching and departing, captivating everyone in the room. It was a vivid lesson in how sound effects can enhance the theatrical experience, making stories come alive.
The students were then treated to an interactive performance of The Magic Stick, a delightful children’s play featuring a hedgehog and a hare. The two talented actors brought the story to life, using expressive lighting and sound effects that added depth and excitement to the narrative. The tale, rich in themes of friendship and adventure, resonated with the young audience, sparking their imagination.
Adding to the day’s enchantment was a surprise puppetry performance that truly stole the show. The puppet’s impromptu dance to Michael Jackson’s “Beat It” elicited gasps and cheers, especially when one of our students had the chance to interact with the lively character. It was a moment of pure magic that blurred the lines between performer and audience.
Beyond the performances, the students enjoyed playing on the trampoline, sharing a delightful lunch, and engaging in board games, fostering camaraderie and joy.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the team at Ala for hosting us and providing such a surreal and enriching experience. The day was a beautiful blend of learning, creativity, and fun, leaving our students inspired and eager to explore the arts further.
