24 March 2025 ⎻ This week, our school transformed into the most charming little cinema for a magical experience we proudly called Tyros Talkies — a special movie screening to celebrate the end of a wonderful academic year. With tickets in hand and excitement in the air, our primary students marched in a line, just like real moviegoers, to the “ticket counter” set up at the back of the school. There, they received their tickets and were led into a room that had been beautifully transformed into a warm, cozy cinema.
The movie of the day? “Spirit: The Stallion of the Cimarron” — a breathtaking animated film about a wild mustang with a heart as untamed as the land he roams. As the lights dimmed and the screen lit up, the room came alive with gasps, giggles, and cheers. The children were completely immersed, responding with awe to the action-packed scenes and cheering with joy as Spirit, the brave stallion, raced across mountains, leapt over canyons, and refused to be broken.
The movie, beyond its thrilling storyline, had so much to teach. It follows Spirit, a wild horse born free in the majestic Wild West. He is captured by humans who try to tame him, but Spirit’s courage, loyalty, and determination shine through as he fights to return to his herd. Along the way, he befriends a kind Native American boy named Little Creek, who treats him with respect and compassion — unlike the harsh treatment he receives from the settlers. This friendship becomes a beautiful symbol of trust and freedom.
During the screening, the children couldn’t stop applauding and shouting with joy, especially during the moments when Spirit outwitted his captors or galloped with full speed through the sweeping landscapes. It was truly a shared adventure, and watching it with their friends made the experience even more unforgettable.
Adding to the charm was a delightful snack break — just like the good old days! The students were served salted peanuts wrapped in conical newspaper, bringing back the nostalgic feel of traditional cinema-going.
What made the day even more special was how Rose Ma’am, our beloved Principal, added an educational twist to the experience. After the film, she explained that the wild horse in the movie — the mustang — was the inspiration behind the famous Ford Mustang car. She described how the car, like the horse, was designed to be bold, fast, and full of spirit.
She also drew fascinating connections to our geography lessons, teaching us about the Wild West — the rocky mountains, deep canyons, and vast open plains we saw in the movie. It reminded us that films can teach us a lot if we pay attention to details like the setting and background.
We also had meaningful conversations about how Native Americans lived in harmony with nature, treating animals with kindness, unlike the settlers who often sought to control and tame wildlife for their own purposes. This gave us a new perspective on respect, freedom, and empathy — not just for animals, but for people and cultures too.
Tyros Talkies wasn’t just a movie day — it was a lesson in courage, friendship, history, and humanity, all wrapped up in an unforgettable cinematic experience. What a perfect way to gallop into the holidays!
